Everyone knows Google, in fact, it can safely be said that you found this site most probably through Google Search. In fact, more than 95% of viewers who come upon this site come through Google search pages. Google has such a phenomenal success that its name has basically become a synonym for search. I am sure many have heard the term "Google it", or seen the term being used in movies. In recent months Google has been in news not for its search related business, but for its involvement in a making an Operating System for Mobile Phones. The Android Operating System, if the news reports are to be believed, has become a raging success with T-Mobile increasing its estimates of numbers of HTC's G1 Google Phone being sold or pre-ordered. Another reason Google has been in news was Google Chrome. Google's latest creation to compete against Microsoft's Internet Explorer.

As said earlier, this article will basically concern itself with basic stock information of Google Inc, how it performed for the year to date, how it fared against the rivals, compares to its industry, and the overall indexes of the market.

Google stock is fairly an expensive stock, even expensive after it's' significant fall due to the current financial turmoil. Google Stock closed at $359.36 on Oct 31, down $0.33 or 0.09%. Google stock has mostly been falling for most of the year barring March-April session, where the company stock rose relatively compared to throughout the year. On average, Google stock has a volume 8.2 million. A fairly large amount for such an expensive stock, and yet Google's stock changes hands quite often. The Market Capital of Google Inc. stood at $113 billion, with a beta of 2 - which means that Google stock is 100% more volatile than the market. Stock's 52 Week High stood at a whopping $747.24, and a low of $309.44. The company has 314.45 million shares out, with 60% of them being institution owned. There is a discrepancy in ownership % of institutional shareholders, with Google Finance showing 60%, while Yahoo Finance shows 80%. Some of the major institutional holders of Google Stock include FMR LLC, Capital World Investors, Barclays Global Investors UK Holdings, Capital Research Global Investors, AXA, Price (T. Rowe) Associates Inc, Vanguard Group, State Street Corporation, and Janus Capital Management. Some of the major mutual fund holders are Growth Fund of America, Capital Research Global Investors, Fidelity Contrafund, Fidelity Growth Fund, Vanguard 500 Index Fund, American FDS Insurance SER-Growth Fund, and Fidelity Magellan Fund.

 

Google Stock Performance / Google Stock History

 

Oct 31: For the year to date, Google stock declined a whopping 48%, or $332. That is a massive price drop. Those investors who held through Google stock throughout the crisis must have felt a lot of pain in their portfolios, losing half of its value (of course depending on % Google Stock made in portfolio). Google's stock debuted the year at $691.48, roughly double the price, and was also the high for the year to date. The stock saw a low of $329 on Oct 27 - just a few days before. Google didn't offer any dividends nor were there any stock splits for the year to date. Google's stock loss in value was comparable to Baidu, Apple, and Yahoo, but was much worse than Microsoft.

Of all the above listed companies Microsoft fared much better, losing only 37% of the value in its stock price, while Baidu lost 47%, Yahoo lost 47%, and Apple lost 45%. The graph below illustrates how these companies fared for the year to date.

Google Inc. and Computer Services Industry Performance

 

The Computer Services Industry lost 42% of its value, quite comparable to the loss of Google. With these heavy losses, it can be attributed the loss in stock value was systematic. The entire industry fared much better than Computer Services. NASDAQ lost 35% of its value, while Dow Jones lost about 30%, and S&P 500 lost about 34%.
